Make no mistake, Google got obliterated by Microsoft's blitz attack in the great AI war of 2023. GPT-4 captured the zeitgeist of the artificial intelligence age we just entered, and things got so bad for Google that people unironically started using Bing. But the war is just getting started, and just yesterday, Google unleashed its highly anticipated Gemini model that beats GPT-4 on nearly every benchmark. It is December 7th, 2023, and you're watching The Code Report.

## The Rise of Gemini
Gemini first became known to the public earlier this year at Google I/O when Sundar Pichai explained it like this: "We've been applying AI to make AI, rigorously tested AI with AI." Gemini is a multimodal large language model that will replace Lambda and PaLM 2. Like GPT-4, it's multimodal, which means it's not only trained on text but also sound, images, and video. 

### Impressive Capabilities
Google's demo is absolutely insane. Gemini can recognize what's going on in a video feed and respond in real time. For example, a person draws a duck, and the AI tells him it's a duck. It can do that in multiple languages. It can even keep track of things in an ongoing video feed, like playing the game of find the ball under the cup, and even after the cups are scrambled, it still knows where the ball is. Gemini can also generate images on the fly like Stable Diffusion and even generate music based on a prompt, including converting images to audio.

### Logic and Reasoning
Gemini excels in logic and spatial reasoning. Using two pictures, it can tell you which car will go faster based on the aerodynamics of the vehicle. In the future, a civil engineer will be able to just take a picture of some land, and the AI can instantly generate blueprints for a bridge. This means software engineers aren't the only type of engineers becoming obsolete. Google also unveiled AlphaCode 2, which performs better than 90% of competitive programmers, solving highly complex abstract problems using techniques like dynamic programming.

## Is It Just Marketing?
All these demos look amazing at first glance, but is this all just a marketing sleight of hand from Google? Currently, Gemini comes in three sizes: Tall, Grande, and Venti. The smallest version is designed to be embedded on devices like Android phones, while the Pro version is a more general-purpose model, and Ultra is the high-end model that's blowing everyone's minds.

### Real-World Performance
If you're in the United States, you can actually use Gemini right now in the Bard chatbot, which is using Gemini Pro, the mid-range version. Bard is way better than it was 6 months ago and still extremely fast, but after using it for a few minutes, it's pretty obvious that it's not quite as good as GPT-4 Pro. However, GPT-4 is nervous about Gemini Ultra. When I asked about it, GPT-4 started throwing shade at itself before Sam Altman pulled the plug, giving me a network error.

### Benchmarks
Gemini Pro underperforms GPT-4 in most situations, but Gemini Ultra outperforms it on almost every single category. Most notably, it's the first model ever to outperform human experts on the Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU), which is typically a multiple-choice test over a wide array of subjects, kind of like the SATs but for AI. However, Gemini Ultra underperforms GPT-4 on the HellaSwag benchmark, designed to evaluate common sense natural language by having the AI finish a sentence that's often vague and ambiguous.

## Training and Infrastructure
The technical paper describes how they train this beast using version 5 tensor processing units deployed in super pods of 4,096 chips each. These super pods have dedicated optical switches allowing data to transfer quickly between the pods to train in parallel. They can dynamically reconfigure into 3D torus topologies, reducing latency between chips. The scale of Gemini Ultra is so large that they had to communicate between multiple data centers. The training dataset includes everything from the internet, including web pages, YouTube videos, scientific papers, and books. They filter for quality and use reinforcement learning through human feedback to fine-tune quality and avoid hallucinations.

## Availability
Overall, Gemini looks amazing on paper, but prepare to be disappointed. The Nano and Pro models will be available on Google Cloud on December 13th, but the Gemini Ultra Pro Max won't be available until next year until additional safety tests are done and it reaches 100% on the HellaSwag benchmark.

The Code Report: Bun.js - A Game Changer for JavaScript Development


## Introduction
Most developers will never admit it, but that game-changing new app they're building probably could have just been an Excel spreadsheet. Excel, which came out in 1985, could be the single most important piece of software for our modern service-based economy. Working with Excel formulas at my dead-end white-collar job is actually where I got my first taste of programming. I used formulas to figure out that I would never be able to own a house unless I got a higher-paying job.

## Python in Excel
But you can't do real programming with Excel. It is possible to hook it up with Visual Basic, but that's just way too Microsofty. Luckily, as of yesterday, Microsoft Excel will now support Python, a feature developed in collaboration with the creator of Python, Guido van Rossum, which is totally awesome. Here's how it'll work: in Excel, you have access to this new Pi formula which can run Python code against the data in your spreadsheet. For example, if you want to put your data into a pandas DataFrame, you can now accomplish that by simply highlighting your data and running the corresponding Python code. 

Another huge benefit is the ability to use Python database packages like Seaborn and Matplotlib. More importantly, though, it allows developers to write their own custom functions that can wrangle and clean real-world data sets, which can be fed to the hungry AIs. In fact, you could even do machine learning directly in your spreadsheet with tools like Scikit-Learn. That's pretty cool, but don't expect it to train deep learning models with tools like PyTorch and TensorFlow. 

## The Industry Transformation
The key to success is that your Python code does not run locally but instead runs in Microsoft's Azure Cloud. This will, of course, keep you safe from the dangers of spreadsheets and also from the hassle that is managing your Python versions locally. They teamed up with Anaconda to create a standard runtime for running Python in Excel in Azure. However, being able to run Python locally offline is far more privacy-friendly and would be faster in most situations. The only problem is that Microsoft then wouldn't have a product to sell you.

You could switch to Linux and run LibreOffice, which has support for macros in both JavaScript and Python. It has had those features forever, but good luck convincing your boss that's a good idea. It's just too free and too open-source. Python in Excel is going to be a game changer for the boring corporate world. Over the last few years, I've been using Google Sheets with Apps Script, which is one of the most underrated tools out there. It's the same basic idea as Excel and Python but with JavaScript. I use it for a variety of business-related needs, like automating the shipment of t-shirts and stickers to Fireship Pro members, and it can even be used to create custom menus and dialogues. However, Python is a far more powerful language when it comes to data analysis.

## Conclusion
What this means is that virtually every white-collar worker will now be able to generate some Python code with ChatGPT, copy and paste it into Excel, and solve the vast majority of common problems out there. Microsoft will be the one running and hosting this code. They already have the most powerful AI models, and those models will only grow bigger and stronger over time. Nobody's even close to Microsoft right now in the AI race, and that's a result of their developer-friendly strategy, which can be broken down into three steps: 

First, they embrace the developer community—developers, developers, developers. Then, they extend developers with awesome new features and tools. Finally, I seem to have forgotten what the third step is, but this has been for this blog

Python Integration in Microsoft Excel


## Introduction
Imagine a futuristic utopia where you commute to your dead-end job on a magic levitating hover train, then hop on your hoverboard to meet up with your friends to make TikToks using Android phones that have nearly unlimited battery power, zero heat production, and use quantum chips that are a billion times faster than your current phone. That future may not be as far off as you think if we're to believe the South Korean scientists who recently claimed to have discovered a room temperature ambient pressure superconductor known as LK-99. If it turns out to be true, this would easily be the greatest scientific discovery of the 21st century. The only caveat, though, is that it might be total BS.

## The Claim
South Korean scientists recently released two non-peer-reviewed papers, and scientists around the world are currently racing to reproduce their results. To understand why this is such a big deal, we need to stop pretending that we know what a superconductor is. A regular conductor is just a material that allows electricity or electrons to flow through it, like aluminum in high voltage transmission lines or copper wires in your house, gold and silver if you're a baller, or even ionized gas like fluorescent light bulbs. Not to mention, salt water is a good conductor. The problem is that as electrons flow through these metals, they meet some resistance, and that resistance causes heat. That's why our computers need fans and heat sinks, and why power lines need to run at very high voltages. It's really not ideal.

## What is a Superconductor?
Superconductors are materials that can transfer electricity with zero resistance. That sounds awesome, but the problem is that they only work in super cool temperatures, like approaching absolute zero, or under extreme pressure, like Ocean Gate Titan pressure. That makes them nearly useless for all practical applications with a few exceptions, like highly specialized MRI machines. They also have interesting magnetic properties. Type 1 superconductors expel all magnetic fields when transitioning to a superconducting state, which is known as the Meisner effect. Type 2 superconductors don't completely expel magnetic fields and can operate at relatively higher temperatures, which makes them more suitable for practical applications today.

## LK-99: The Game Changer
LK-99, if it's even legit, would completely change the superconductor game because it operates at room temperature with ambient air pressure. Surprisingly, cooking this stuff up isn't that difficult. You just take some lead oxide and some lead sulfate, heat it at 725 degrees Celsius for 24 hours, and that should give you some lanarkite. Then create some copper phosphide with a vacuum, mix them together, and heat them up, and now you've got LK-99. It's surprisingly simple, and the next 48 hours will be really interesting to see if other cooks can actually get this recipe to work.

## Potential Applications
The practical use cases for such a material are impossible to understate. Electronics will become faster and more efficient, medical tech would become cheaper and more accessible. It could open the door to things like quantum computing and frictionless transportation and dramatically improve energy efficiency to the point where politicians don't need to feed us bugs to make the weather better.

## Skepticism and Reality Check
Before you get too excited and start investing all your money on levitating train stocks, many smart people out there are highly skeptical of this paper. By comparison, the highest temperature superconductors of today operate at negative 20 degrees Celsius and require pressures of 25 million PSI. There's already a rabbit hole of drama surrounding the paper, like it looks like it may have been uploaded without everyone being on board, which might suggest some infighting between researchers. Just recently, another scientist had his paper taken down that had also claimed to discover a room temperature superconductor. Everyone wants to be the next Albert Einstein, and in rare cases, people might cherry-pick data or outright lie to get that clout.

## Conclusion
